Recently while planning a project, I realized Harmony had a gap in our catalog of yarns: I needed a wooly non-superwash DK-weight yarn in solid colors. Something as useful as Cascade 220 but thinner, a workhorse with a great color palette and sturdy ply structure.
Luckily, soon after that realization, we had a meeting with our Kelbourne Woolens yarn rep, where we learned about Germantown DK. Kelbourne is a wonderful woman-owned American yarn line based in Pennsylvania. We not only love their products, but their ethos as well - check out their values and practices on their website.
All that said, we are so excited to bring Germantown DK into our core base of yarn substrates! We consider this a yarn worth keeping around long-term. Personally I love the way this knits up. I just knit a small sample skein into a large scrappy intarsia project, and the hand really stood out to me among a large sampling of other substrates.
This year Kelbourne is spotlighting Germantown DK in their Year of Hats - a super fun program where each month they release a new free hat pattern, with corresponding kits. Personally I'm thinking of using these patterns for Christmas gifts - it sounds so fun to learn new stitch patterns and shaping techniques in a small one-skein project like a hat. Keep an eye out on our website, as we'll have a collection of kits (and a few more colors of Germantown DK) in stock soon.
