Pattern Review: The Roomy Raglan

Pattern Review: The Roomy Raglan

The Roomy Raglan is a free pattern, written by Jules Efterfield. This is her first pattern but it has found great success from KnitTok, still ranking in the top 20 hot patterns on Ravelry after just a few months. She wrote the pattern based off of the popular babaà no. 51. It is a raglan styled sweater that is worked top down. Mimicking the babaà signature style it has a structured, boxy fit with bracelet-length sleeves. The pattern was originally written for “one-size”, following babaà sizing, but is easily modified by simply doing more or less raglan increases. However, Jules recently published an updated version of the pattern with graded sizing and is available to purchase.

The pattern recommends using Cascade Yarns Ecological Wool (bulky) held together with a fingering weight yarn. Since I knew Harmony carried a great selection of Ecological Wool colors, I just knew I had to make one and see what all the rave was about!

Surprise, surprise, I am obsessed with it! I used two skeins of Cascade Yarns Ecological Wool in Chocolate and 5 skeins of Cascade Yarns 220 Fingering in Doeskin Heather. For a sweater that requires two yarns held together, the price was way cheaper than buying a new babaà sweater.

Jules’ pattern was easy to follow and is relatively beginner-friendly. As for sizing modifications, I am typically a size L/XL, so I decided to knit a few extra raglan increases. I’m happy I did but I honestly think I could have done it without them and still have a great fit. The final product is bulky and structured but not too heavy. I love the marled look and the brown is a great neutral that goes with everything. I wear it at least 3-4 times a week and I’m already dreaming of making another.

If you’re also interested in making your own babaà dupe, here are some yarn combos I threw together: a few neutral and a few colorful.

Eco+ / Turtle + Kelbourne Woolens Perennial / Chartreuse

Eco+ / Silver Grey + Gepard Wild & Soft col. 520

Eco+ / Boysenberry + Malabrigo Ultimate Sock / Magenta

Ecological Wool / Antique + BC Garn Baby Alpaca / Dark Chocolate Brown

Eco+ / Lake Chelan Heather + Cascade 220 Fingering / Como Blue
