Tussah tweed is a light fingering weight 100% silk yarn, that works beautifully knit up on its own or adds stunning dimension when used as a hold-along. The dimensions of color in each colorway of Tussah Tweed are breathtaking - they combine color combos we haven't seen before so artfully. Unlike some other tweed yarns, the tweedy pops are truly built in to the yarn; you won't have neps falling off your project. It's a true heirloom yarn. BC Garn describes the yarn here:
Tussah Tweed is an exclusive 100% silk tweed yarn. Made from wild silkworms, the silk used in this yarn changes in colour due to their varied diet and can be anything from a pale ivory to a chestnut brown. This gives added depth and nuance when dyed on top of the natural colour. The silk moths are allowed to flee their cocoons before being processed into silk which means that Tussah Tweed is 100% cruelty-free.
With a beautifully selected range of colours, the tweedy flecks vary from subtle and subdued to vibrant and colourful. An absolute marvel, this yarn keeps the interest high and is easy to work with. It isn't slippery like most silk yarns and doesn't slide around the needles whilst working with it. This truly is a remarkable yarn that must be seen to be believed: a 100% silk tweed.
Silk is naturally thermoregulating which means that it keeps the body warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather. It absorbs moisture better than any other fibre and is highly breathable, making it perfect for summer garments.
Unlike most fibres, Tussah Tweed 100% silk yarn gets softer the more it is washed and worn. It is not only suitable for hand knitting and crocheting but also for knitting machines, weaving and embroidery.
Here are a few patterns we're itching to knit up in Tussah Tweed:

Top to bottom, left to right:
- Hewson by Leah McGlone (free). This super-simple shawl was made specifically to show off Tussah Tweed's gorgeous texture. It only requires 2 skeins.
-
Uukii Cardigan by Rosa P. (€9.90 EUR). Designed for 2 light fingering yarns held double, I love the idea of knitting this cardi with one strand of Tussah Tweed and a coordinating strand of something inconspicuous like Cascade Heritage. It's a great way to stretch the money spent on Tussah, while preserving its gorgeous texture.
- Shiny by Ririko ($7.50). I dream of wearing this pullover! Knit top-down seamlessly in one strand of Tussah Tweed, it would be such a comfortable cross-seasonal piece.
- Rowan Top by Carol Feller (€7.50 EUR). A classic! As Carol describes it, "This wearable summer tank top has a simple folded hem and draped neckline, making it perfect for wearing on those warm summer days or neatly under a work blazer."
- Röllakan by Ni Folkman Drost ($8). This pattern is a hidden gem; it's only got a few projects listed on Ravelry, one of them being mine. This top was not only a delight to knit, but is my most complimented and comfy knitted tee. It would be a DREAM in Tussah Tweed! I'm daydreaming of a version using colors 11, 19, and 20.
- Dianthus Top by Emma Maier (€6.50 EUR). I think this is going to be my first Tussah Tweed Cast on; it's so adorable! This tank calls for Tussah Tweed held double, and knits up at a DK weight. A great way to enjoy the luxury of this yarn with the comfort of a larger needle size. The pattern also includes an optional peplum if you're feeling a little more frilly.
- Mono_Floral Lines Scarf by Mono Knit Editions (€4.62 EUR). If you're not ready to go all-in on a big Tussah Tweed project, here's a great one-skein option! The silk would be so comfy and classic around your neck at any time of year.
- Joplin Shirt by Caidree ($6.50). This project is such a jaw-dropper! Imagine the feel of this lacy boxy breezy tee on a summer day. Absolutely magic.
