Description: In this class you'll learn to knit the Tolsta Tee by Rebecca Clow. As Rebecca says, "The Tolsta Tee is a perfect basic raglan t-shirt that can be the canvas for all of your creative ideas." With DK and fingering weight versions and lots of included modification options, it truly is so customizable.
While knitting you'll learn about yarn choices for summer knits, reading knitting patterns, picking the right size and fit for your body, top-down raglan construction, ribbing, and short rows. Mel will also teach you basic fit modifications and several design modifications, including stripes, texture, basic lace, and duplicate stitch if desired. The options for customizing this tee are just about endless! Check out other knitters' versions here.
The Tolsta Tee is written in 10 sizes with finished bust circumferences between 31.5-66.75". This class is for ages 16 and up.
Prior skills recommended: Basic knitting skills. This class is designed for beginner knitters who have learned the knit stitch, but want to practice and learn more about garment knitting.
Materials needed: Before the first session of class you'll need:
- The pattern for the Tolsta Tee by Rebecca Clow, available on Ravelry or on Etsy
- Between 500-1100 yards of yarn, depending on what size you'd like to make. This pattern calls for DK weight yarn (like Juniper Moon Cumulus, Noro Sonata, Cascade Noble Cotton, Cascade Anchor Bay, Noro Uchiwa, or Noro Haunui Cotton), or fingering held double (like Kelbourne Mojave, Gepard Wild and Soft, Universal Bamboo Pop Sock, or Cascade Heritage). Please note if you use fingering held double you'll need twice as much yardage.
The pattern also has a fingering weight held-single version, where you can use the fingering weight yarns above! Please note, this version has different yardage, needle size, and gauge requirements. Purchase the pattern to find more details.
- 16" and 32" Size US 8 (or size needed to get gauge) circular needles
- 16" and 32" Size US 6 (or .5mm smaller than gauge needle) circular needles
- Removable stitch markers
- Tapestry needles
Prep work: Before the first session of class you will need to purchase at least one skein of your yarn and make at least one swatch. Mel recommends that to make your swatch you cast on 26 stitches, and knit flat in stockinette stitch for 40 rows. You may not need to block your swatch, but Mel recommends at least steaming it. You're aiming for a gauge of 17 stitches and 29 rows over 4 inches. You may need to make multiple swatches if your stitch count is different than the pattern's gauge. In the first session of class we will use your swatch to plan what size to make your sweater and what modifications you'd like to add. If you want to knit your tee in the lace or textured patterns provided in the pattern, swatch in that stitch pattern.
